Serbia are making their first appearance at the Euros as an independent nation under head coach Dragan Stojkovic. There’s plenty of talent in the ranks too, including Juventus' Dusan Vlahovic, Ajax’s Dusan Tadic, and former Premier League player Aleksandar Mitrovic (now of Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League). Serbia may not be the favorites to lift the trophy come July, but they could make waves in Group C and will have to reach the knockout rounds in their sights.
For England, the last Euro tournament in 2021 was another cruel “what if?” moment after the Three Lions failed to win a closely fought final against Italy at Wembley. The expectation in some corners is that England is capable of going a step further in Germany and winning their first-ever European Championship (and first major international trophy since 1966). However, with major injury concerns, a coach in Gareth Southgate who is widely tipped to be on his way out, and a history of failing to perform when the pressure is on, England looks like a dark horse for disappointing at Euro 2024. But they do have Real Madrid’s star boy, Jude Bellingham, which could be enough to drag them reasonably far through the competition.
The Serbia vs England live stream sees the runners-up from three years ago begin their quest to go one better when they face the Eagles in a crucial Group C encounter in Gelsenkirchen.
One of the favorites to win Euro 2024 after qualifying with ease, Gareth Southgate’s side has won just one of their last five games with questions raised over their defense. With Harry Maguire ruled out of the tournament through injury and Luke Shaw unavailable for the first game, England will have a reasonably untested back four.
Serbia, who finished behind Hungary to secure their place in Germany, will hope to capitalize on this fact and certainly have the players to cause problems. In Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dusan Vlahovic, they have a genuine goal threat, while Dusan Tadic can unlock even the most well-drilled defense.
Equally, England’s strength is in the forward positions and Southgate is blessed with plenty of attacking talent. With Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, and Phil Foden all likely to start, the Three Lions will be confident of starting Euro 2024 with a victory.
With Germany, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands all winning their opening games, England will hope to follow suit. Three years ago they started their Euros campaign with a 1-0 win over Croatia, will they once again start with a victory?
England gets their Euro 2024 campaign underway as they take on Serbia in Gelsenkirchen tonight. The Three Lions are the favorites to go all the way in Germany this summer and end a 58-year wait for a major trophy, but Gareth Southgate’s side still has questions to answer after a recent friendly defeat to Iceland and with issues to contend with in defense. They were beaten finalists at Euro 2020 - it remains to be seen whether they can take that final step.
Serbia, Denmark, and Slovenia are the Group C opponents for England, who are expected to progress with minimal fuss. Luke Shaw remains injured so Kieran Trippier is expected to start at left-back, while Trent Alexander-Arnold is in line to partner Declan Rice in midfield. Few teams in the tournament can compete with England’s options in forward areas, with Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and Phil Foden all enjoying stellar seasons at club level.
Serbia are the underdogs tonight but will believe they can qualify through to the knockout stages, regardless of the result here. The top two teams in each group progress to the last-16, along with the four best third-placed teams.
Southgate has always been conscious of outstaying his welcome as England boss and he is more swayed by supporter sentiment than the view of his Football Association paymasters, who would like the 53-year-old to extend his contract beyond December, whatever happens at the Euros.
England is on a mission to bring football home once more, and this year, they stand a genuine chance of breaking the 58-year drought. Gareth Southgate's squad experienced a bitter defeat in the Euro 2020 final at Wembley, losing to Italy in a penalty shootout. However, they're now aiming to go one step further.
Despite the absence of starting center-back Harry Maguire due to a calf problem, the Three Lions are still the bookmakers' top pick to win the trophy.
Notable omissions from the final 26-man squad include Marcus Rashford, James Maddison, Raheem Sterling, and Jack Grealish, who have been replaced by several tournament newcomers. Cole Palmer, Anthony Gordon, Kobbie Mainoo, and Adam Wharton are among the 12 players making their major tournament debut for England.
They'll be keen to make their mark as England attempts to navigate Group C, having been drawn against Serbia, Denmark, and Slovenia. The first match is against Serbia as the tournament gets underway later this week, reports Football London.
Under Southgate's leadership, England have consistently reached at least the quarter-finals in every major international tournament, and with this likely being his last competition in charge, they'll be aiming to end on a high note.
Gareth Southgate's team narrowly missed out on their first major trophy since the 1966 World Cup, as they were beaten by Italy in the Euro 2020 final on penalties at Wembley three years ago. They then suffered more heartache as they lost 2-1 to France in the 2022 World Cup quarterfinals.
Gareth Southgate's side was beaten finalists to Italy last time out, and with a side blessed with the likes of Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, and Harry Kane are many pundits' favorites to log one better this time and finally lift the Henri Delaunay Trophy in Germany for what would be the very first time.
This year's tournament marks the first time Serbia have qualified for the Euros as an independent nation, and will likely fancy their chances of making a big impact here. Their squad boasts an array of talent, including striker Dusan Vlahovic, Ajax's Dusan Tadic, and Al-Hilal duo Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Aleksandar Mitrovic.
